About Us

The beginnings of the Journey Church of Atlanta (JCA) can be dated back to Pastor Matthew Ro's days in Philadelphia, where he served at Grace Covenant Church (GCC) as a college pastor.   Having been saved in college, Pastor Matt had a huge burden for the spirituality of college campuses.

At that time, the Lord laid on his heart a burden to pray for various cities, one of them being Atlanta, where a campus-church plant could happen. After a scouting trip with Pastor Young Kim, senior pastor of GCC, the two began to dream and plan about planting a church in Atlanta.

In the summer of 2004, Pastor Matt and a team of six young adults from GCC made their way south.  Without jobs or even places to live, the seven church planters came in faith and set roots in Atlanta. They secured a place to worship, connected with students on the campuses, and experienced the movement of God first hand as they saw the ministry of JCA take off and flourish.  The Lord's provisions were great, both personally and corporately. On August 15th, 2004, JCA's doors were opened for its very first Sunday service.

Since then, God has used JCA to reach various campuses in Atlanta, establishing ministries at Georgia Tech, Emory University, Georgia State University, Emory-Oxford College, and the University of Georgia, being recognized as official student groups at four of the five campuses.  The Lord has been adding to JCA’s numbers every year, just as He did in the book of Acts.

Another way that God has been growing our church is through the young adult community.  Though an unanticipated ministry at first, many graduates of the college ministry along with other professionals in Atlanta began to build up the ministry and have continued to be a great blessing to JCA.  As a result, our young adult community has been vital to our transformation from a college campus church in 2004 to a multi-generational church that is now targeting young adult singles and families.

In the summer of 2011, God called JCA to move forward again in faith and plant a church in the Research Triangle of North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham area).  We are excited to see how God is going to use Journey Church on the campuses (Duke, UNC, and North Carolina State) and among the working professionals in that area.

We continue to obey the calling that the Lord gave us in 2004, “to multiply, mobilize, and mature passionate followers of Jesus Christ for the glory of God”.  It has truly been amazing to see how an ordinary church, filled with ordinary people can be used by an extraordinary God to do extraordinary things.  We invite you to join us on this journey to advance God’s kingdom on the college campuses, in the workplace, and all across the world.

Until He returns,
